ILO Pacific Director Highlights Progress of Tonga’s Quality Apprenticeship Pilot Program During PIFLM53 Visit

While in Tonga for the 53rd PIFLM5, Mr. Martin Wandera, the International Labour Organization (ILO) Director for the Pacific, took the opportunity to visit several sites on the ongoing Quality Apprenticeship Pilot Program.

During his visit, he directly engaged with apprentices and employers to hear their experiences. Launched in March 2024 in collaboration between the ILO, MTED, and the Tonga Chamber of Commerce, this pilot initiative involves 21 students from the ʻAhopanilolo Technical Institute (ATI), all specializing in the cookery sector.

The program combines classroom learning with real-world experience, leading to a Certificate Level 4 upon completion in November 2024, with credits from practical work.

Mr. Wandera’s visit highlights the importance of this initiative that equip young people with essential skills for the workforce. His presence in Tonga for PIFLM53 allowed him to witness the initiative’s progress firsthand and discuss its impact with students and employers.
